Yvonne Schmidt, 88, died July 1, 2018, at Kingwood Medical Center in Kingwood, Texas. She is survived by her son Charles, daughter Michelle, son-in-law Rick Hebel, granddaughter Nina Hebel, sister Yvette Slattery, and several nephews and nieces. Yvonne was born on September 29, 1929, in New York, to Sophie and L. Charles Lemesnager. She earned her BS in 1951, followed by her MA in 1955 from New York University’s School of Education. Yvonne worked as a full-time elementary school music teacher until 1960. She was married to Fred Schmidt until his death in 2006.
Yvonne was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hyde Park for over 45 years. She loved to travel and was an avid amateur photographer. For many years Yvonne headed the Trips and Tours committee of her AARP chapter. After moving to Houston,Yvonne had a flashback to her Trips and Tours days thanks to Harvey floods (boat and bus trip). We are forever grateful to efforts of the staff at Regent Kingwood, Victory Christian Center, and other volunteers who evacuated Yvonne and the other nursing home residents and cared for them through the next evening.
