

NEW IBERIA – A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Dennis Leroy “Swede” Hanson, 68, will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Thursday, September 22 from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm. In honor of Dennis, everyone is asked to dress casual for the gathering. Memorial services will be held in Lake Crystal, Minnesota at a later date for Dennis to return home.
Dennis, known by family and friends as Swede, was born in Lake Crystal, Minnesota to Gloria Starr and Arden Hanson. He passed away Monday, September 19, 2016 at Ochsner Foundation Hospital with his family at his side.
Swede served in the U.S. navy from 1966 to 1970 and was stationed on the USS Hornet during his tour of duty in Vietnam. He moved to New Iberia, LA in 1976 to work in the oilfield industry. He worked with Cardinal Wireline for over 22 years, and with the Wood Group in Broussard and ultimately retired from GE Oil and Gas. During that time, he met and married his Cajun girl, Anna Maturin.
Devoted father of Zachary Maturin and Justin Darby. Selfless step-father of Cheree Blanchard, William Darby, Scotty Darby , Jeremy Landry and Rusty Landry. Cherished grandfather of Angel and Christopher Blanchard, II, Samuel and Richard Darby, Taylor Darby, Tana and Dregon Landry, LouElla Grace Darby, Zachary Maturin, Jr. and Levi Maturin. He is also survived by his sister, Beth and Jim Amlie of Kasota, brother, Russell Joe and wife Debbie Hanson of Lake Crystal and Norma “Bunny” Hanson of Cambria, Minnesota.
Amongst his best friends are Captain Mike and Patty Williams of New Iberia, Tony Randell of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and his riding buddy Diego, his four-legged friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, William Hanson and nephew Ross Hanson.
