Born 4/20/1932 Deceased 9/22/2016.
Born to Eunice Bertrand and Thomas Lapointe II from Indian Bayou Louisiana, A family of rice farmers that eventually migrated to New Iberia where they managed the Ted Gosling Farm crops. Hazel was raised in New Iberia where she found happiness in helping with the families pursuit of survival through the struggles of late 30’s, 40’s and 50’s era. As soon as she was old enough to carry and wash plates, sweep floors, and fix beds she started working for Mr Donald LaLonde Sr. and Mr Buddy Shea and their families it was the way of life then. Her marriage to Wildy Reaux Sr. in 1949 found her happiness as well as struggles through the depressed times of the era and bearing and raising 5 children. Taking work in every canning factory of New Iberia, The pepper, Okra, sweet potatoes, and many other seasonal vegetables. The great smells from the Trappeys factories are still embedded in all our minds from her days work clothes. Her desire for “More for the Family” drove her ambition for “More” so she started seeking work in the restaurant business. She started at the Winter Warm Restaurant in the early 60’s or so working for the Tilly’s. Working The City Café for some time and then lunch counter for Lowes Department Store for a couple of years. After which she went to work for The Delahoussaye’s in their Restaurant on Main Street. Serving there till the eventual sale to Mr. Wolford Folse Jr. The French House brought her great happiness besides supporting the family and serving people. Its here she met her second husband and his beautiful family Mr Pat Oubre. She continued at the French House Restaurant for some time after its sale to The Schwing Family. Spanning some 3 decades on the same corner. When her Restaurant serving days were finished her serving the Lord even more than ever became her burning desire. She began spreading the Gospel of the Lord any and every where she could. She also started doing caretaker work and Child Care for some very special grandchildren and those she loved as her own grandchildren. Spending much of her nights staying and caring for elderly or needy clients until she herself became the Patient. Her last 11 years have seen her living in the assisted living complex happily making fig cakes and other seasonal treats for all to enjoy until her needs for personal care took her to the Nursing home. She will be sadly missed by hundreds of friends and family members.
