James Joseph Meyers

NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Mr. James Joseph Meyers, age 77, at 10:00 am on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Harrington officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Thursday with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 am on Friday until service time.

A native and resident of Coteau, Mr. Meyers passed away at 5:00 am on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Belle Teche Nursing Home.

James was a kind and caring man who devoted his life to the service of others. He was a caregiver for many members of his family and stayed by their sides offering love and support until their final days. He had a passion for fishing, especially catfish. If there was water, James would be there trying to catch a few fish before the sun went down. James also enjoyed gardening. He had a green thumb and would plant tomatoes, cabbage, roses, and various flowers. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his brother, Francis Meyers and wife Peggy; sister, Jenny Menard and husband Wilson “Sonny” both of Coteau; mother, Mazel Meyers; Chihuahua mix, Tootsie Roll Meyers; and numerous nieces, nephews, step-children, and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Gladys Oliva Meyers; father, Claude Meyers; mother Rena Landry; and brothers, Johnny Meyers and Russel Meyers.

Pallbearers will be Van Meyers, Jory Baldwin, Ty Johnson, Josh Baldwin, Johnny Meyers, Ladd Meyers, Blaine Meyers, Kenneth Meyers, and Keith Meyers.
