Jessie J. Romero, lovingly called Pop” and a beloved native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Iberia Medical Center at the age of 70. Jessie was born on October 2, 1954, in New Iberia to the late Caliste and Eunice Romero. He was one of six children born to that union.
From an early age, Jessie was instilled with a strong work ethic and a deep desire to help others. He spent many years working in the oilfield, starting with Heldenbrand and later with BOCO, which became Drilling Tools. Most recently, Jessie worked at Emerald's Billiards, where he earned the affection of both the staff and patrons. Whether he was helping out or showing the younger crew how things were done, Jessie’s dedication to his work was evident, and he was always a welcome presence.
Outside of his professional life, Jessie had many passions that brought him joy. He was an avid bowler in New Iberia, participating in numerous leagues over the years and played baseball. He also enjoyed shooting pool at Emerald's Billiards and was particularly fond of playing bourrée with family and friends. But his greatest joy was the time he spent with his grandchildren, spoiling them with love.
Although Jessie’s presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of kindness and generosity lives on. We find comfort in knowing that Jessie is now resting in eternal glory, and we will one day be reunited with him again. Your memory will forever remain in our hearts, and we love you always.
Those left to cherish Jessie’s memory are his children, Tiffany Romero (Nakia), Jared Romero (Brittany), and Carla Romero (LeTroy); his grandchildren, Eden Barrett-Powell, Kayden Castille, Ethan Romero, and Nevaeh Johnson; his sisters, Dorothy Nero and Barbara Decoux (Kim); and his godchildren, Kristi Olivera and Bryant Maturin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Maturin Romero, and his siblings, Ivy Romero, Delta Romero, and Juanita Romero.
Funeral services to celebrate Jessie’s life will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Evangeline Funeral Home, with Minister Ivy John Romero officiating. Jessie will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
