Marguerite Needham Mangrum

NEW IBERIA – Funeral Services will be conducted for Mrs. Alex Mangrum, the former Marguerite Needham, age 94, at 11:00 am Friday, June 14, 2013 at Church of Christ with Kenneth Wright officiating. Interment will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 11:00 am at Lakeview Memorial gardens-5000 West Harrison Road-Longview, TX. David Cotham of Alpine Church of Christ will officiate the graveside services.

The Lord called Marguerite home on June 11, 2013 at the age of 94. She was born in Arden, Arkansas on March 20, 1919 to Georgia Ludman and Charley C. Needham. She passed away in New Iberia, LA at the home of her niece, Betty Greer Thomas.

At the age of 13, Marguerite took her first job as a telephone operator. In 1940 she moved to Texarkana, Arkansas and went to work for AT&T. It was December 21, 1941 that she married Alex Mangrum. Their first home was in Texarkana, Arkansas. After a short time Alex was drafted and they began to move about. Alex was discharged from the Army in 1944 and they settled in Longview, Texas. Marguerite and Alex were faithful workers for the Lord.

Marguerite retired from AT&T after 37 years of service. In 1979 Marguerite lost the love of her life, Alex. About that time she became part of the “Fun Bunch”, a group of Christian women dedicated to serving others. Still there was time to play “Skipbo” and foster lifelong friendships. She treasured the close friends she made with those in her Sunday Morning Bible class and often spoke of the fun times they shared together. She was an eternal optimist. She often said “Everything good happens to me”. Her ever present smile and her kind heart endured her to all who knew her. She will be missed, but it warms our hearts to picture her walking hand in hand with Jesus.

Marguerite is survived by nephews, William Latham and wife Cindy, James Hunter Greer; niece Betty Thomas and husband Donald and a niece in law, Ruth Greer. She also has numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Mangrum, her parents, Georgia Ludman and Charley Needham; sisters, Effie Mary, Ola Needham, Verta Greer, Elsie Latham, her brothers, Carl Needham, Boyce Needham, Russell Needham and Jessie Needham, two infant siblings; nephew, Charles Greer and niece in law, Laverne Greer.
