NEW IBERIA - A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Melvin Joseph Broussard, Sr., age 82, at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in New Iberia. Fr. Matthew Hebert will officiate. Interment will follow at the church mausoleum. The Iberia Veterans Honor Guard will perform Military Honors.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Friday from 8:00 am until the service time. A rosary will be prayed by the Men’s Rosary Group at 11:00 am on Friday.
A native and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Broussard passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at his residence.
Born on November 22, 1939 to the late Melvin and Solange Broussard, Melvin was one of five children. He proudly served his country in the Louisiana National Guard from 1955 to 1969 as a Staff Sargent E-6. Melvin was a kind and fun loving man who enjoyed the simple things in life. He was an avid outdoorsmen’s, often choosing to work outside in the yard or go camping over staying inside. Melvin was also a talented woodworker. He was always working on some project and often made things for family and friends.
Melvin will best be remembered for his love of football and the Saints, raising Brangus Cattle in his younger days, and baking cookies. He was always proud of his great cookies. Melvin had many titles and did a great many wonderful things during his life time, but his greatest joy and what he was most proud of was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family above all else. Melvin will be truly and deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Lucia “Lucy” Romero Broussard; step-daughter, Robby Bourque Trahan (Timmy), sisters, Vergie B. Marshall, Harriet B. Vincent, and Kathleen B. Broussard; grandsons, Tyler Bourque, Taylor Anderson (Lauren), Tanner Anderson, and Keith Anderson; and great grandson, Luke Binning.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Solange Broussard; son, Melvin Joseph Broussard, Jr.; and sister, Geraldine Broussard Rivet.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Bourque, Taylor Anderson, Tanner Anderson, Keith Anderson, Wayne Romero, and Michael Viator.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Billy Savoy, Joe Credeur, Henry Rivet, Timmy Trahan, and Luke Binning.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Hope Hospice and their staff for the kindness and support they offered to Melvin during his final days.
