

NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Sonya Byler Daspit, age 51, at 10:30 am Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Derise officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Friday with a Rosary at 6:30 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 am on day until service time.
Sonya passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center after a long battle with Myelofibrosis.
Sonya was quick with a smile and easy to laugh, she brought joy to both family and lifetime friends. Sonya was a 1982 graduate of Mt. Carmel Academy and was very active in the 4-H club, winning several state competitions. She was currently employed with Executive House. She was a frequent volunteer at her son’s school. Active in church, Sonya was deeply religious and loved serving as a lay minister for Sacred Heart Church in Broussard. She also enjoyed reading, traveling and most of all rocking in her chair while visiting with family and friends. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Sonya is survived by her husband of 25 years, David P. Daspit; one son, Paul Daspit; her parents, Patrick and Jane Comeaux Byler; two sisters, Cherie Heslop and husband Jon and Mignon Byler; one brother in law, Michael Daspit and wife Angie; one sister in law, Celeste D. Bourque and husband Karl; her nieces and nephews, Ryan Heslop, Patrick Heslop, Allison Daspit, Benjamin Daspit, Daniel Daspit, Erin Bourque, Chad Bourque and Bliss Bourque. She is also survived by her lifelong best friend since kindergarten, Claudia Bienvenu, a loving aunt, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
