Thelma was born September 24, 1942 in Cypress Island to the late Leo Babin and the late Yolande Melancon Babin and was one of 13 children to that union. She and her husband Curtis met while they were both working for National Supermarket here in New Iberia, and it was the beginning of a beautiful marriage and career in the grocery business that would span over 55 years. They would eventually become owners and operators of Bi-Lo Supermarket and Daspit Supermarket. She was a longtime member of Nativity of Our Lady Church Parish where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Ladies Altar Society.
