It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Joseph Latiolais, Sr., who peacefully departed this life on Monday, February 12, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 23, 1927, to the late Joseph and Celina Toffier Latiolais in Iberia Parish, Walter lived a remarkable 97 years filled with service, dedication, and love.
Walter exemplified courage and commitment through his honorable service in the Army Medical Division during World War II, where he served his country with pride and distinction. Following his military service, he embarked on a long and illustrious career in the oil and gas industry. Starting as a tool pusher, Walter's unwavering work ethic and determination propelled him to the role of supervisor, where he continued to make significant contributions to the industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, Walter was known for his warm and affable nature. He possessed a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and he never met a stranger. His genuine kindness and infectious personality endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In his leisure time, Walter found joy in pursuing creative endeavors, particularly wood carving and handcrafting jewelry and rosaries for his beloved family and friends. Despite his age, Walter embraced technology with enthusiasm, demonstrating a keen interest in electronics of all kinds.
In addition to his many passions and accomplishments, Walter had a charming sense of humor and a playful spirit. Often, he would affectionately refer to himself as a "celebrity," especially when he was sporting his favorite WWII Veteran baseball cap. This charming quirk endeared him even more to those around him, showcasing his lighthearted approach to life and his unique ability to find joy in the simplest of things.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Walter's life will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Loreauville, LA, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 am, with Fr. Barry Crochet officiating. Following the Mass, Walter will be laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery, where he will receive Military Honors provided by the Acadiana Veteran’s Honor Guard honoring his dedicated service to his country.
Walter Joseph Latiolais, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and kindness that will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Survivors include his son, Scott Latiolais, and wife Annette; grandchildren, Dorothy “Dottie” Andres, Moriah Guidry, Joshua Guidry, Christian Guidry, Silas Holtzclaw, Quinlynn H. Johnson, Ashley Latiolais, and Jenny Latiolais, along with numerous great grandchildren nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Toffier Latiolais; one son Walter “Wally” Latiolais, Jr.; two daughters, Connie L. Guidry and Kathy L. Holtzclaw; one grandson, Newbon “Nubbin” Guidry III; four sisters, Irene Pelous, Mildred Seneca, Rena Olivier and Doris “Lil” Latiolais, one brother, Charles “Charlie” Latiolais, Sr. and his great grandson, Blake Lukaszeski.
