

Edward Joseph Bertoneau, 96 passed away peacefully on May 23, 2013, joining his beloved wife Bernice Juneau Bertoneau and his infant son Edward J. Bertoneau Jr. in the hands of the Lord. He is survived by his two daughters Patricia Ayrod (Bernard), June Cognevich (Kenneth), five grandchildren Andrea Ayrod, Monica Waasdorp (Michael), John Cognevich (Katie), Daniel Ayrod (Jane), Tonya Wellman (Greg), five great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. As one of five siblings, he is also survived by his sister Gladys Jee.
From a very long lineage of native New Orleaneans, the culture of the city was the core of his DNA! He loved the food, the music, the Saints and especially the closeness of extended family. Always athletic as a young man, he was SAAU Gymnastic All-Around Champion in 1939 and 1940 and medaled many times.
His true vocation in life was Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 60. He was also the longest serving member at 77 years. He served the Union as a Board Member, President and Business Manager. Under his leadership, the retirement plan was instituted, the apprenticeship school expanded and the current Union Hall was built. Later he became an International Representative for the UA, where he served until retirement. He served on many boards and committees and eas renowned in the city for his knowledge of Labor Law. Because of this, he worked with Father Toomey’s Justice Center and taught a course in Labor Law at Loyola University.
Friends, relatives and members of Local 60 are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Monday May 27, 2013 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church at 1:30pm. Visitation will begin at 12:00pm and continue until Mass time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Crusaders, PO Box 24845, New Orleans, LA 70184.
