Marie Louise Bargas Ewing died on February 15, 2011 at Landmark of Baton Rouge at the age of 103. She was born in New Orleans on September 7, 1907 to Mary Schultz and Edgar Bargas. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by Helen and Charles F. Anepohl, Edith A. and Herbert L. “Jack” Wiggins, and Annie and John Wendell. She is survived by cousins Patricia Wiggins and spouse Neli Shaw, Lynn Wiggins and partner Marna Manning, and Gay Anepohl and spouse Max Yarborough. She is also survived by her New Orleans next-door-neighbors, “Angels” Jeff and John. It was through their loving care and help that she was able to live alone in New Orleans until the age of 94. She was the “adopted grandmother” of Trevor and Garrett Landry¸ and close family friends of Dr. and Mrs. Marty Landry.
Marie lived her entire life in New Orleans until 1994, when her family moved her to Baton Rouge to live at Landmark. She worked at the Gulf Oil Co., and then at the U.S. Rubber Co., where she retired at the age of 61. After her retirement, she had a full and active life that involved travelling, knitting, playing bridge in a club that met for over fifty years, going to Mardi Gras parades, and attending Jazz Fest with neighbors. She worked part-time at the Fairgrounds Race Track and did volunteer work at Mercy Hospital and NOMA. She was a true New Orleans Lady, wearing Mardi Gras beads as part of her daily attire and loving a good party.
Marie was a survivor, and regardless of what adversity came her way, she managed to adapt and continue on her path in life.
Special thanks go to all of her caregivers at Landmark of Baton Rouge, especially her nurses, CNA’s, and hospice caregivers who were very kind and caring, especially in her final days. Marie loved all of you!
