

Ann Shumate Bowling, age 69, was born August 12, 1947 and passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, June 10, 2017, after a battle with ALS. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mildred Bolinger Shumate, and her husband, Glenn W. Bowling. Ann is survived by a host of extended family and friends including Roger Ball, Liza Martz, Anita Freytag, and her dearest friend and caretaker, Pat Hodges. Ann graduated from Lincoln Memorial University and did her graduate work at the University of Tennessee. She was a biology teacher at Claiborne County High School and worked 21 years for the Tennessee Department of Education. After retirement, Ann worked for LMU’s Teacher Education Department as a mentor and supervisor of student teachers. In addition to her passion for a quality education for all children, Ann loved her church, working on her family farm and serving her community. She was an active member of the New Tazewell United Methodist Church where she served mostly as Sunday School Superintendent. Ann also served as a Claiborne County Commissioner for a number of years, and she was the driving force behind the development of the Claiborne County Animal Shelter which was recently renamed the Glenn W. & Ann Shumate Bowling Animal Shelter. Visitation will be held at the Coffey Funeral Home Chapel in New Tazewell on Monday, June 12 from 12:00pm until 3:00pm with a service to follow at 3:00pm. Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery immediately following the service. Obituary remarks will be given by Mr. Gary Burchett, and the Eulogy will be provided by The Honorable John McAfee. Rev. John Hatfield will conduct the graveside service, and music will be provided by Janice Derryberry and Cindy DeBusk. Pallbearers will be Steve Bollinger, Stacy Crawford, Junior Freytag, Thomas McAfee, Sheriff David Ray, Bill Shumate, Tom Shumate and Danny Stone.
