
Elizabeth Corbin Cardwell known to her family and friends as “Lizzy” died in Leelanau County, Michigan March 20, 2011 of natural causes. She was 94 years of age. She was born July 15, 1916, second daughter of Russell and Mary Frances (Welch) Corbin in Claiborne County, TN. She and her sister, Flora, grew up with their mother and step father, Thomas Reed, there. She received her public education at Blue Top School at Tazewell. In the midst of the Great Depression, she married Paul E. Cardwell of Lone Mountain, TN. Over the next years they became parents of two daughters, Shirley Jean and Mary Lynn. As with other members of their generation they worked at whatever jobs they could. They decided to move to Michigan for job opportunities in defense plants as World War II began. In Monroe, Michigan she worked during World War II as a riveter on airplane wings as manufacturing plants were coverted to provide equipment for the war effort. In 1948 they returned to Tennessee for a three year period. A son, David, was born there in 1948. Thereafter their adult lives were spent in Monroe, Michigan where she worked with her husband in running Paul Cardwell Real Estate. There she was a member of Saint Paul’s Methodist Church. they retired to Tampa, Florida where they lived until her husband’s death in 1992. She returned to Michigan where she lived until she died. Also preceding her in death were daughter Shirley and son-in-law Alfred Herrmann; ;and her sister Flora and her brother-in-law Lester Smith, also three half sisters and four half brothers.

Frederick “Fritz” Herrmann (Julie) of Sharon, Mass.
Patrick Cardwell (Michelle) of Cream Ridge, NJ
Jonathan Cardwell of Seattle, WA
Two step grandchildren: William Frank Smithson (Olivia) of Clarksville, TN and Maria Dawn Young (Paul) of Seattle, WA.
She had seven great grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
The family will receive family and friends Saturday April 9, 2011 from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. in the afternoon at Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell with graveside memorials at the family cemetery at Cardwell Ridge Road in Lone Mountain, TN
