CHEVAT-Alan, 72, devoted father, husband, and steadfast Brooklynite, passed away suddenly September 20. Born in Boro Park, his family moved to Queens where he attended Andrew Jackson H.S. then SUNY Stony Brook, received an MA in English from Columbia and a JD from Brooklyn Law School. He worked for 32 years for the N.Y. State judiciary, becoming Chief Court Attorney for the Appellate Div., 2nd Dept. A true child of the 1960’s he loved rock and roll and the blues, ran the lights at the Fillmore East and went to Woodstock. Alan was an inveterate New Yorker and culture buff, a staunch Yankees fan, an avid hiker and outdoors enthusiast, and a lifelong practitioner of martial arts. An ardent cyclist, he biked to work and to Coney Island from his home in Park Slope. In retirement he embarked on his true passion as an independent scholar. His interests ranged from philosophy to English Lit, world history to mathematics and theoretical physics. As a progressive Jew he explored the foundations of Judaic theology and world religions. He was a lifelong supporter of social justice and frequent campaign volunteer. Most of all, he was a dedicated family man, who deeply loved Ruth (Mandel), his wife of 33 years and his daughter Rachel. He is also survived by his brothers Richie (Debra Kagan), Cary (Beth Savodnik) and Ben (Sherri Rossoff) and his six nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to WFMU Radio. Services at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 W. 76 St., 1 PM, Friday, Sept. 24.
