Beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather Allan Howard Glick passed away at his home in Manhattan on January 28th, following a battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Marilyn Glick (Rubin), his wife and life partner for 58 years, was at his side. Allan led a vibrant and full life. He worked for more than half a century at First Manhattan Company in New York City, and divided his time among residences in Manhattan, Hastings on Hudson, and Columbia County, NY.
Born in Manhattan on November 15, 1938 to Henry B. Glick and Rose Glick (Brensilver), Allan was raised in New Rochelle, NY. His formative years were shaped by his strong Jewish faith and a love of music. Allan’s religious foundation began at Anshe Sholom, the New Rochelle synagogue his paternal grandfather helped found at the dawn of the 20th century. Allan remained an active member, chanting the Haftorah each Rosh Hashanah. His love of music was expressed through the instruments he mastered (clarinet, piano and saxophone) and his beautiful tenor voice.
Allan was a graduate of Dartmouth College (B.S., 1960) and the Amos Tuck School of Business (MBA, 1961). Allan’s musical talent was on full display at Dartmouth in the acapella group the (Injun)aires, the Glee Club, and musical theater performances. It was during his sophomore year at Dartmouth that he met Marilyn, the love of his life. They were married in 1960 and spent their first year of marriage in Hanover, while Allan completed his MBA. Upon graduation, Allan embarked on a long and successful career. After working briefly as a CPA at S.D. Leidesdorf & Co, he began in 1968 what would become a 51-year long career at First Manhattan Company in New York City, rising to the position of Senior Managing Director. Beloved by his business associates and clients alike, Allan’s integrity coupled with acute business acumen proved an invaluable combination.
His family, Dartmouth, music and his Jewish faith formed the foundation of his life. Allan’s family was spread across the globe and he and Marilyn kept in touch with relatives in Denmark, Sweden, England, and Israel. Their travel throughout Europe was highlighted by frequent visits to Paris. Allan enjoyed hosting family gatherings at his home in the Hudson Valley, swimming in the pond, enjoying the local culture, and spending time with beloved neighbors. A passionate and active Dartmouth alumnus, Allan was a member of the Board of Overseers of the Hopkins Center for the Arts, served as the President of the Dartmouth Club of Westchester, and was a consistent and effective fundraiser for the Dartmouth College Fund. His appetite for culture and music was fed by subscriptions to the New York Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the classical music broadcasts of WQXR. Among the Jewish organizations to which Allan devoted his time and talents were: Beth El Synagogue of New Rochelle, Woodlands Community Temple and WCJS in White Plains, and most significantly UJA Federation of Greater New York where he served as the first Chair of the Jewish Communal Network Commission. With a desire to deepen his understanding of the teachings of religious commentary, Allan devoted several hours each week to the study of Torah with Rabbi Elchanan Adler, professor and scholar of Talmud at Yeshiva University.
Allan will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband to Marilyn, a kind and gentle father to daughters Madeleine and Cherise and son-in-law Robert, a beloved grandfather to Audrey, Amelia and Benjamin, and a cherished brother to sister Barbara and brother Michael.
Allan’s funeral will be held Thursday, January 31st at 9:45am at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Allan’s memory can do so to: Congregation Anshe Sholom 50 North Ave, New Rochelle, NY 10805 or to The Hopkins Center for the Arts, Dartmouth College 6066 Development Office Hanover, NH 03755-4400.
