Dad grew up in Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, during the great depression, the oldest of 3 for George and Francis Kagan.

As a kid dad was usually playing with his friends, doing poorly in school and getting into trouble with Grandma Francis.

Dad was Self deprecating about his 72 avg at Lafayette HS in Brooklyn and Spent most of his time playing sports like handball, school yard football and street hockey.

In his senior year he attended Brooklyn Tech in evenings to learn technical drawing to become a draftsman.  
This fateful decision potentially saved his life when he was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and was deployed to the radio signal corps in France because of that technical experience. Otherwise he might have been sent to the front lines in Korea.

But The luckiest thing that ever happened to him was attending a Jewish singles dance at the JCH on Bay Parkway in Brooklyn where he met one Marcia Sherman. Little did he know what they were starting !

Careerwise , dad famously set about working with grandpa George manufacturing ladies hats as the Audrey Lyn Hat Company, named after his niece Audrey and sister Linda.
This was the creative pinnacle of his life and while we struggled to get by, he loved the work and especially when the whole family came down to the millinery factory in the flat iron district to help out.

Hillary and I always remember those days, we remember the silly songs he made up, his loud laughter , crazy road trips, too much salt and his concern for us.

The most important message and lesson from his life was that He loved his family, loved being around them and wanted to protect them.

He adored my mother, Hillary and I, and of course His extended family of grandchildren Kyle, Chad, Kacey, Jess, Grant, and their growing families w/ latest additions of great grandchildren Rowan and Mason.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Alvin was a ‘next door neighbor’ to my parents at Sunrise and a regular at Shabbat services. I will miss his beautiful voice.
