
Andrew Joseph Hernon died on February 21st. Andrew was a resident of New York City. He was born on August 14, 1931, in New York City to Isabelle (Murphy) and Andrew Joseph Hernon, Sr. He was a graduate of Regis High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1953. After graduation, he became a member of the of the United States Army and spent much of 1954-5 in Korea. On discharge from the Army, he obtained a Masters in Business from Columbia University, and began his business career, at the Bankers Trust Company in NYC. He obtained a Masters Degree in History from NYU.
Andy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen (Cummins) in 2005. He is survived by his four children: Marie-Therese (Peter) MacDonald, Catherine (Michael) Bukosky, Elizabeth (Greg) Alimaras and Andrew (Nancy) Hernon. and five grandchildren: Margaret, Alexandra, Charlotte, Michael and Claire. Andrew is survived by his sister Isabelle (Hernon) Carney and one niece and three nephews.
Above all, Andy was a kind and generous family man, contributing regularly to Regis High School, Notre Dame, the ’53 Mass Fund, and his parish community. He was an extraordinary minister responsible for making the sacraments available to thousands of patients at two major NY hospitals, Sloan Kettering and NY Presbyterian, especially after Ellen passed away- right up to the month of his death.
A funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist on Tuesday, February 26th, 2019. Viewing was held at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Monday, February 25th, 2019 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9.
