"With heavy hearts and deep love we announce the passing of our mother, Clara Inés Sánchez, who left us on February 1st, 2026. She passed away in her home of natural causes, and was immediately surrounded by her loving family. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Hunter College, and spent most of her career in childcare."
Clara was born on May 28th, 1950 in Armero, Colombia. She attended boarding school as a child, and spent some time living and working in Quito, Ecuador. As a young adult, she lived in Bogotá, Colombia where she met her husband, Ovidio Gómez, while horseback riding in 1979. In subsequent years, she opened and managed her own boutique clothing store, Vissot, before moving with her husband and children to the United States in 1984.
Clara is survived by her four children and three grandchildren: Andrés, Felipe, Esteban(Li Anne), Martín, Varick, Cruz, and Irving.
Above all things in this world, Clara prioritized her family and found the most joy spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had a profound love of life and the world’s natural beauty, which she fulfilled through her incessant reading and picture taking. She loved returning to her birth country and kept in constant contact with her siblings, Mercedes, Bernardo, Enrique, and Esperanza who live out of state and in Colombia. She was an avid church goer and found second homes in Our Lady of Good Counsel and St Thomas More parishes. She was also a lifelong learner and artist at heart - in her final years, she audited college courses; took language, music, and ballet lessons; and frequently painted and created collages. She will be laid to rest at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Queens, NY, alongside her husband, not far from where they raised their four children together.
