Dara was my friend for forty years  .I met her at p.s.l in about ninety eighty one. She was standing near a film projector that was part of her installation. I thought we seemed alike and later she thought we could be friends I was an art critic among other things. We both taught different things and I would sub for her occasionally. Hers was hands on video making class and I noticed the girls had a harder time getting their hands on equipment we both believed in the empowerment of women I wrote about her a great deal in the eighties and put her in shows I curated. She became really famous in the nineties and beyond. We both had strong father and dead mothers. We often  had thanksgiving dinner together in  a restaurant. She showed me how to live with and love dogs   We shared a  love of animals

The residents of West Broadway Arches will miss our friend Dara and the special way she viewed the world…

Dara was a singularity, the spirit and soul of our family. She saw a world that had gone astray and she devoted her life to getting it back on track through her art. One consoling fact is that she was able to advance that goal as far as she did, especially during these times of callousness and neglect. Her memory will always be honored and she will be deeply missed for the rest of our lives.

Our last dinner together was so sweet, and filled with love. Our relationship was the definition of challenging, but our connection was so strong it survived and thrived as we emailed or called just about every day for over a decade. While gravity was strong, we danced gingerly as distance adds uncertainty, but that night was simple, honest and consumed with our love and affection for each other. Tears flowed, long hugs followed, and a memory that will stay with me until I die, was born.
