Harriet approached the world with infectious enthusiasm, always eager to explore new ideas and experiences. Whether attending an art exhibit or engaging in spirited conversation with friends and family, she brought joy, humor, and a sense of adventure to every moment. Her purpose was clear: to instill a sense of curiosity and wonder in others—a mission she fulfilled with grace and exuberance. Learning, adventure, Harriet loved it all - more than anything Harriet loved people.
Harriet had a fierce determination to continually learn and grow. Going back to school later in life, she earned her Bachelor of Arts from Hunter College and went on to receive a Master’s degree in Arts Administration from New York University.
As an executive recruiter, Harriet placed professionals across a wide range of prestigious institutions. Her career spanned numerous sectors within the nonprofit world, including culture and the arts, education, health and human services, and many significant Jewish organizations.
She excelled in her career as an executive recruiter, a job she loved because it allowed her to do what brought her the most joy: connecting people. Her networking skills and ability to build relationships helped her advance in her career, while also making others feel welcome, included and valued.
Her wisdom came from her curiosity, her openness, her willingness to keep showing up - to people, to new experiences, to whatever the day held.
Harriet was the beloved mother of Carla Shohet and Jacqueline Shohet; endlessly supportive grandmother of Ethan (Anna Sherbin), Elan, and Gavi Shohet Zabin; cherished cousin of Harvey Mendelsohn (Helene Lipstadt) and Sophia Mendelsohn (Jonathan Landesman). Her family meant everything to her, as did the lasting friendships she cultivated throughout her life.
Harriet's funeral was held at Riverside Memorial in NYC on February 5, 2026.
To honor her life, donations may be made to HIAS, Lab/Shul or IAHV in memory of Harriet Shohet.
