We are very sad to announce the passing of Laurette Marie Oldewurtel, of the Upper East Side, New York, on September 15, 2023. Beloved sister, amazing friend, caring aunt and devoted pet owner/rescuer, Laurette had just turned 63, born on September 8, 1960. She loved being a New York City girl. She will be sorely missed by all.
Laurette was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, raised in South Orange, New Jersey, graduated from Seton Hall University and earned her Series 7 investing license. She started her career with Shearson Lehman/American Express, worked for Citicorp Financial Services and several other financial institutions and was presently registered with B. Riley Wealth Management. She is survived by her sister and four brothers, many cousins, nephews and nieces, as well as tons of heartbroken friends and fellow dog walkers.
Those who knew her will remember Laurette for her selflessness and generosity. Her ability to put others first was admirable. Whether professionally, acting in the best interests of her clients, or personally, she was always willing to offer help to a friend or neighbor. Her passing has left an unfillable gap in the lives she has touched.
Growing up a Springsteen-loving Jersey girl, Laurette got a job in Manhattan and never looked back. She loved New York City. She also loved fostering/rescuing unadoptable cats and dogs from the ASPCA, devoting her spare time to extended dog walks and greeting neighbors in her apartment lobby with Alabama or Georgia or Coco. She was predeceased by many cats and dogs, leaving behind two of each.
In her early twenties, while working full time, Laurette graduated from Seton Hall University and earned her Series 7 license the same year. This began a forty plus year career in the financial industry. Many of her clients were close friends either before or subsequent to her handling their investments. She loved planning a party whether as the hostess or a guest. Her apartment was the venue of the sometimes noisy extended Oldewurtel family Christmas get-together. She was extremely loyal to family, friends and coworkers. She refused to allow anyone to be inconvenienced in her presence. It was always a pleasure to be with Laurette. Her vacation trips to Maine were eagerly anticipated by close friends, once with Martin the cat that she rescued from a Pennsylvania farm for them. She took her “job” as Aunt very seriously and bragged about each niece/nephew’s milestones. Laurette loved jelly doughnuts from Glaser’s bakery, burgers from JG Melon, Grand Marnier Shrimp from Chef Ho’s and Virgin Coladas from Maz Mescal. She was a masterful Bogle player and a wiz at jigsaw puzzles.
