My dear and great friend, since we met in 1980, my world changed with a new observation and appreciation skill enhanced by the many projects you did for me, Paul Ramsay (Australia), St. Vincent's Worcester and Metro Health in Framingham, MA. Louis was a longtime special friend, who started out as a colleague as you know.  Marilyn and I shared many events with you, large and small and treasure the times we were together.
Michael learned so much from Louis about creativity and professional behavior and he is sorely missed.

I met Louis shortly after he met Judy and we became immediate friends and frequent lunch companions. He invited me to work with him on various projects and honored me by asking me to be one of his groomsmen at his wedding to Judy. I miss him and am so sorry he is gone but I will never forget him. My deepest condolences to Judy and to everyone in his family.  I never met anyone quite like him.

Louis was a kind, gentle and thoughtful person. He had the passion of an artist and the humor of an elf; but also a man with strong beliefs, dedication to his projects, his family and to things that mattered.

When you gave him a book, if you had not written an inscription he gave it back to you so you could so "I can think of you when I read it. That's important".  He sent birthday emails in a rainbow of colors and took pride not only in his own accomplishments but in those of his friends, as well.  He was talented designer and writer, a loving partner to Judy and  a supportive, kind friend to all those lucky enough to get to know him. He was so many things, but above all a truly good, decent human being.

Louis and I met about 30 years ago, at a business dinner at the Cornell Club, becoming fast friends after a marketing push and an excellent meal.   Subsequently, we would meet for lunch, usually at Knickerbockers, perhaps quarterly or semiannually.   Most recently, he traveled upstate for a meal at the CIA (Hyde Park, not Langley) and we had plans to further explore the Biltmore estate and FDR home this spring, with Louis taking the morning train to Poughkeepsie.
Usually we would commiserate about politics, or Pratt, or other anecdotes about life.  He and I were in agreement about most things, like the political leadership, about the need to follow your downfield blocking in NYC, and about too many personalities to mention here.
Consistently, Louis would point out the subtleties / sophistication that I would miss, and I could always count on him to revise my jaundiced opinions.
He was always in good spirit, not didactic, and positive about the future – I sincerely hope he’s correct. 
And at the end of day, I think all who knew Louis understands that he will be TRULY missed.

Please accept my deepest sympathy at the passing of your extraordinary husband and my most treasured friend for over forty years.  Louis and I shared many milestone moments, some replete with joy and others with seemingly unbearable sorrow.  Through everything, Louis was kind, caring, sensitive, keenly intelligent, perceptive, compassionate, and empathetic.  How I shall miss him!

You are in my thoughts and prayers, where you shall remain, as I look forward to seeing you at the Memorial Service for Louis on Wednesday.

Louis to me was a man of great talent, charm, and character. His seafarer’s beard and piercing blue eyes reflected the depth of his spirit—steady, thoughtful, and vibrant.

As I look back on our time together and the friendship that we maintained, I am grateful for the calm and inspiration he brought into my life.

Louis always seemed to touch the lives of many with his warmth, talent, and unwavering kindness. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the genuine connections he nurtured. 

May his memory continue to bring comfort and light to all who knew and loved him.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation is very saddened by the passing of Mr. Louis Nelson, a longtime friend, the designer of the Mural Wall at the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and Foundation Board member.
Gen. John H. Tilelli, Jr., U.S. Army (Retired), Chairman of the Foundation, said, “Louis was a cherished friend and a respected Army Veteran who made one of the most significant contributions to Korean War Veterans with his masterful design of the Mural Wall.  Mr. Nelson’s passion and genius will forever be reflected in the 2,400 faces of the Mural Wall that he designed. I don’t know of another work of art that has such beauty and meaning.”
Louis Nelson described his vision for the Mural Wall in his book, Mosaic: “I began to visualize a wall of portraits, all emerging from a length of dark gray granite; I decided the wall must be personal … and compassionate – an intimate reflection of those who had served…”  Mr. Nelson’s work of art has actual faces of Korean War Veterans who supported ground troops represented by the 19 statues in the “Field of Service.”  With the 19 reflections on the granite Mural Wall, the Memorial’s four million annual visitors can see 38 service members which is symbolic of the 38th Parallel which separates North and South Korea as well as the 38 months of the Korean War.
Louis Nelson is survived by his wife, renowned singer and author, Judy Collins.  In Mosaic, she echoes the sentiment of millions of Korean War Veterans’ families who learn about the War: “After reading it, I know more, feel more and understand more about that far off place in history, conflict and the spirit of survival.”
The Foundation’s Vice Chairman, Lt. Gen. Bernie Champoux, U.S. Army (Retired), is a close friend of the family and shared his condolences, “Louis and Judy have a special heart for Korean War Veterans and their Families.  Their love for each other and Veterans are well known and respected.  Louis’s passion to make a lasting contribution to all Korea

Dearest Judy,
I fell in love with Louis the moment I met him at 54 Below, the night of Leonard's 90th birthday party.  He had the kindest eyes I've ever seen and the most marvelous bushy eyebrows and sideburns.  It was a great look and he was a great man.  We admired his devotion to you and his obvious deep love.  And although Louis was a person of many achievements, what we loved most was his relationship with you.
Out of that first meeting came a very tender friendship, which was too soon cut short by Louis's passing.  But the friendship with you remains and will endure for as long as we're all still around.
