On June 14th, 2025, the world lost a radiant soul. Maureen Faith Millingen was born to Jamaican parents Rupert & Cordelia Millingen on April 1st, 1974, in the Bronx, NY. Maureen brought a profound depth of compassion, intelligence, and quiet strength to all who knew her.
Raised in White Plains, NY, Maureen was a proud graduate of the Greenburgh public school system, completing high school in 1992. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies with a minor in Spanish from SUNY Albany in 1996 - an academic foundation that reflected her lifelong passion for culture, justice, and language.
She began her professional journey as a Spanish teacher for the New York City Department of Education, where she inspired countless students with her warmth and insight. Driven to make an even greater impact, she later pursued a master’s degree in social work at Yeshiva University, graduating in 2013 with a specialization in Gerontology. As a therapist serving high-risk patients at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, she was a grounding presence for those facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and personal courage, Maureen was a lover of nature, an avid reader, and a seeker of beauty and meaning in everyday life. Whether walking wooded trails, studying cultural histories, or dreaming of travels yet to come, she found joy in connection—to people, to land, and to spirit. Among her favorite places were Denver, Colorado and the peaceful corners of Upstate New York, where she spent cherished time with her closest friends in the embrace of the outdoors.
In 2019, Maureen was diagnosed with a rare form of endometrial cancer. Over the next six years, she faced the disease - the surgeries, chemotherapy, and setbacks that came with it - with an unwavering courage, dignity, and wit. Even in her final days, after transitioning to palliative care, Maureen remained fiercely present - often reminding those around her with a knowing smile that there was “never a dull moment.” Her strength in the face of pain reflected the same spirit that defined her throughout her life: fiercely resilient, openly loving, and full of light.
Maureen is survived by her devoted mother Cordelia, her father Rupert, her loving brother Jason, and a wide circle of cousins and friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Her kindness, intellect, and unwavering empathy remain a light that will continue to guide those who loved her. She will be deeply missed.
