She was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1944 and moved to the US when she was 8 years old. She grew up in New Jersey, then moved to New York for college, grad school, and several years of post graduate life before moving back to New Jersey. After all her children had gone off to college, she and her husband, the late Michael Cole, happily moved back to New York to enjoy all its culture and conveniences, making sure to leave a guest room open for whenever her children came to visit (which they often did).
Mieke was a voracious reader who loved many topics including histories, biographies, anything related to her degrees in International Relations, and the occasional mystery. She enjoyed traveling, art house movies, watching Jeopardy, crossword puzzles, but most of all she loved being surrounded by family and friends.
She is remembered for her many wonderful qualities including, but not limited to, her sharp intelligence, delightful wit, absurd sense of humor, deeply loving nature, and incandescent smile.
Mieke was preceded in death by her husband Michael in June, 2015. She is survived by her children, Matthew (Elizabeth) Cole, Treska (Jeff) Cole, and Daniel (Marisa) Cole, as well as by her siblings Bas (Alex) Knoppers, Anneke Woodward, Els (Michael) Knoppers, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom love and miss her deeply.
