A die-hard New York Yankees fan, Millie’s love for the team was legendary. Stories abound of her and her cousin’s adventures at Yankee Stadium, where they would snag 25-cent bleacher seats. Her passion for baseball knew no bounds, and she would eagerly attend games, meeting legendary players like Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Maris, Elston Howard, and Yogi Berra. This lifelong passion for baseball remained a constant source of joy for her.
Millie’s love for New York City extended beyond baseball. She was an avid spectator of the US Open Tennis tournament for many years and became an instant fan of the New York Liberty when the WNBA arrived in the city. Her excitement was obvious when the Liberty won their first title last season.
Beyond her sports fandom, Millie was a dedicated citizen of the Turtle Bay neighborhood. In her younger years, she served with honor as a member of the NYPD Auxiliary Police force for the 17th Precinct. Wearing the uniform and serving her community was a source of immense pride for her. She also played a pivotal role in establishing the Katherine Hepburn Garden in the Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, even meeting the iconic actress while working on this project. Millie was a long-time member of the Turtle Bay Association, Friends of Dag Hammarksjold, Katherine Hepburn Garden and the 17th precinct Community Board, actively participating in local events and fostering lifelong friendships with many neighbors, but most importantly her neighbors Kathy and Denise of Salon Amici.
In her younger days, Millie owned a printing business and was proud to contribute to the Women’s Liberation Movement during the 1960s and 1970s. She actively participated in the Women’s Strike for Equality March, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. As a lifelong Democrat, Millie remained politically engaged and made numerous friends within the New York Democratic Party, eventually working for Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney until her retirement.
Millie cherished the visits of friends and family and took great pleasure in showcasing her hometown. She frequently hosted lavish dinners for her loved ones on her decade birthdays, always striving to create memorable moments. However, it was not easy to persuade Millie to leave New York City. She occasionally made trips to California to see the "Ellen Show", the Golden Gate Bridge, and catch up with her cousin Carol. But as we often said, “you can get the girl out of New York, but you can’t get New York out of Millie! New York City was her home and her neighbors and friend there were her life.
