May 23, 1937 - November 7, 2022
Nancy Ruth (née Thomas) Alloggiamento departed this world peacefully on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 60 Sutton Place South, her beloved apartment home by the East River in Manhattan for 54+ years.
As the eldest of two daughters of Warren Arthur and Ruth Elizabeth (née Martin) Thomas, Nancy was born on May 23, 1937, in Palos Park, Illinois.
Leaving behind Illinois for the bright lights of New York City in the late 1950’s, Nancy embodied the iconic, New York, New York song classic by Frank Sinatra with her “ ... small town blues... I’ll make a brand new start of it.” In Manhattan, Nancy was ambitious, driven, cunning, bold, talented, often ruthless, yet worked tirelessly with a voracious desire and persistent will. Nancy wanted “to be a part of it’, and was. Big time.
Nancy was a trailblazer; a staunch feminist; a stylishly elegant 'ahead of her time' marketing and advertising whiz; a true New Yorker through and through. She epitomized “And, If I can make it there, I’ll make it practically anywhere.” Nancy instinctively and intimately knew it was up to her, and, in true style sprinkled with grit and determination, Nancy persevered and conquered New York.
In the early 1960’s, Nancy began her illustrious advertising and marketing career as a media assistant with Lennen & Newell Advertising. She proved herself breathtakingly indispensable and quickly rose to prominent and influential executive positions at Jameson Advertising as Vice President of Media; Vice President and Director of Account Services with Waterman, Getz and Niedleman Advertising; Vice President and Account Supervisor at deGarmo Advertising; Vice President and Account Supervisor at D’Arcy, MacManus & Masius; President of NTA & Company, an Ogilvy & Mather Company; President and Chief Executive Officer of Sussman & Sugar, a book-advertising subsidiary of Ogilvy & Mather Company; and, President of NA Communication, Nancy’s namesake marketing firm.
She married her husband, the handsome Alberto Alloggiamento, on December 19, 1965. Both were avid patrons of The Metropolitan Opera, The Museum of Modern Art [MoMA], The Whitney Museum of American Art, and loved the musicals and plays of Broadway. Together, Nancy and Al traveled the world for 35 years of married life until Al’s unexpected passing in 2000, using only carry-on luggage.
Nancy was an accomplished author and executive consultant, and in 1996 published Good Girls, Bad Times, a rule-breaking career guide for the overworked, the under paid and the well-behaved, penned with Judy Buck.
Nancy is survived by her sister Penny Thomas (Jeff Hughes) of Mount Prospect, Illinois; brother James (Teresa) Thomas of Bridgeview, Illinois; brother-in-law Attilio (Toni) Alloggiamento of Redwood City, California; nieces and nephew, Shannon, James and Jillian Thomas of Bridgeview, Illinois; nephews Mark (Nancy) Thomas and great nephews Dillon and Quinn Thomas of Croton-on-Hudson, New York; Matthew (Tohbi) Thomas and great nieces Taylor and Madison Thomas of Boise, Idaho; the extended Alloggiamento family, notably Christine Alloggiamento Frank and John Alloggiamento for their kindness and support to Nancy throughout the years.
Nancy was preceded in death by Alberto Alloggiamento, her husband of 35 years; her loving parents; older brother, Commander Gary Bennett Thomas; and, brother-in-law, John Alloggiamento and his wife, Ann Latorre Alloggiamento.
Always dressed in the latest style and fashion, Nancy epitomized the quote by Oscar Wilde, "I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.” Nancy included this quote on page 91, in the last chapter of her book, so it is fitting that her final request of “everyone who ever matters” be granted with memorial services conducted at Frank E. Campbell - The Funeral Chapel, located at 1076 Madison Avenue in Manhattan [Madison at 81st] on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Nancy also loved the fact that Elizabeth Arden, Yul Brenner, James Cagney, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, John Lennon, Judy Garland, J.C. Penney, Mae West, and of course Rudolph Valentino, were all serviced by Frank E. Campbell, as well.
In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial contribution, gifted in Nancy’s honor to:
