With deep sadness we share the death of Robert Garrett on March 12th. He was born on February 27, 1937, in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Grace and Harrison Garrett. He was a graduate of Gilman School in Baltimore, and then went on to Princeton University and served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a First Lieutenant for three years before attending Harvard Business School.
He moved to New York to pursue a long and distinguished career in investment banking and corporate board directorships. At the time of his death, he was a Founding Partner of Media Advisory Partners. He was also serving as a Board Member for the New York Botanical Garden, the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation, the A. S. Abell Foundation, Board treasurer of the Adirondack Council, Chairman of the Robert Garrett Fund for the Surgical Treatment of Children at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Near Eastern Studies Department at Princeton University, and until recently, Chairman of the Board of Penn Virginia Corporation.
Hiking and canoeing in his beloved Adirondacks brought him special joy throughout his life. Above all he cherished
his wife Jocquie of 48 years, sons Robert and Johnson, daughter-in-law Jennifer and four grandchildren to whom
he was their adored "Papa". All who knew him considered him to be a towering figure physically as well as in
intellect, achievement, curiosity, and kindness to others. Above all, he was a true gentleman.
A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Wednesday, March 26th, at St. James Church, located at 71 st and
Madison Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made either to NYU Langone Medical
Center, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery or to the New York Botanical Garden.
