Bob was a dedicated person, devoted to his faith, his studies and to the people in his life.   He and Theo Corbin touched so many lives with their strength, loyalty and love.   In the 4 years since he passed away I still can feel his quiet kindness,  and I never fail to pause and reflect on it as I pass the building where he lived.

Dear Bob, I have never stopped praying for you. I know you are in heaven with our Lord. Please pray for all of us.  Love you! Susan

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home, and within my family. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Bob and I wrote books together, first for Reader's Digest Books and then for books that publishers asked us to write as freelancers. 

Even as late as a few weeks ago, Bob was serving as my editorial advisor for a new Bible paraphrase, the Casual English Bible. 

He told me he was grateful for the recognition that he still had something to offer. It astonished me that he would feel otherwise, because he gave so much.

Years ago, Bob thought he was dying. I didn't know that, and I asked him to help me write a book for Lion Publishing in England. He said yes. He wrote the best half of the book, a book that won an award over there as the best nonfiction book of the year. 

In the years that followed, he told me many times that the book assignment saved his life because it gave him a reason to fight on.

What a blessed memory...the thought that something I did unknowingly might have helped keep him on the planet a little longer.

When he got sick this time, I was hoping the Casual English Bible project would do the same. We had just started working on Deuteronomy, and he was so looking forward to that book. He helped me make it to chapter 6, and sent me his notes for revisions on September 23, the last of his notes. 

He never stopped learning or writing or editing or helping, with no expectation of reward.

There’s a line in that Bible paraphrase that Bob and I were working on that comes to mind now. It’s something Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. It’s one of the Beatitudes, which Bob helped me paraphrase, as an editor:

“If you’ve loved someone enough to mourn them when they’re gone, God has blessed you.

Now he’ll comfort you.” (Matthew 5:4, Casual English Bible)

Bob Huber worked for over twenty years with the Reader's Digest General Books Division, and for over five years with Encyclopedia Americana. He held a master of philosophy in American and English literature from the City University of New York, a master's in religious studies, and a post-master's certificate in Scripture from the Institute of Religious Studies in New York.  Over the years he has written and contributed to a number of books including "The Bible Though the Ages", "The Bible: A History" and "Jesus and His Times."
Robert was a Secular Franciscan who, along with Theo Corbin, established and directed the Blessed Sacrament Transitional Residence.  This facility provided a safe home for homeless men with HIV.  During the 30 years it operated, the residence served the needs of over 660 men.


Bob was a sweet and gentle man.  He was well versed in Catholic Church history and the Bible.  I will miss him on our Thursday evenings zoom bible study classes with Deacon Scott. 

Bob, May you Rest In Peace in the sweet embrace of our Lord’s  Loving arms  forever.  Amen.  Please pray for us.  I will light a candle for you every time I’m at Mass. Love you and Thank you.  Susan ❤️🌹🙏
