From his early days at John Burroughs High School to his time at the Learning Tree University where he honed his skills in special effects and make-up, Don was destined to leave a mark on the world. His studies continued at Los Angeles Mission College, where he explored the history of American cinema and business. But it was always clear that the world of special effects and make-up was where his heart and talent truly shined. Whether it was fabricating illusions, creating his incredible Ghostbuster proton packs, or working his dream job in the Live Entertainment Department at Disneyland, Don was living out his passion with every step.
Don’s time at Universal Studios was one of the many milestones that defined his career, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Wendy Herran. Their bond, built on over 30 years of friendship and love, was a testament to what it means to find someone who shares your dreams, your passions, and your love for life. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around their shared love of Disney and, of course, their three beloved dogs, Holly, Marley, Lola and Ginger.
Don’s heart was not just for his work but for his family as well. He loved his nieces and nephews deeply, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than supporting them. Whether it was cheering them on at sporting events, attending their live performances, or helping create the most elaborate Valentine's boxes, Don was always present—showing up and showing love in his quiet, reserved way. And, of course, there were the trips to Comic Con, the laughter-filled days at Disneyland, and countless moments of joy shared together.
While Don lived a reserved life, his love for those around him was deep and unshakeable. He wasn’t someone who sought the spotlight, but when he entered a room, his presence was felt—his kindness, his creativity, and his genuine nature left an imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dono took great pride being a member of the Southern California Ghostbusters. Along with his “brothers”, he connected with others who shared his passion for the spiritual world of Ghostbusters and the fun, quirky spirit of sci-fi fandom. Together, they attended events, movie premieres, and charity functions, promoting the love and camaraderie that Dono held dear.
Halloween held a special place in Don’s heart and life. He was a talented special make-up artist transforming normal people into dark, gory monsters. Don took pride in helping his aunt and uncle in creating their Burbank Haunted House maze which attracted people from miles around during the spooky season. Nightmare Before Christmas and Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion are two holiday favorites that will forever be synonymous with Don and Halloween.
To say that Don was loved would be an understatement. His love was a force that carried through everything he did. He lived his life as a true Jedi, following a code of ethics and integrity, emphasizing selflessness, and compassion. Even in his passing, we can take comfort in knowing that Don has become a part of the Force, his spirit continuing to live on in all of us who were lucky enough to have known him for, "There is no death, there is the Force".
Don may have lived quietly, but the love he gave and the lives he touched speak volumes. Dono showed us that the best thing we can experience in this life is love, and the joy that comes from being loved in return. He was greatly loved and will be missed deeply by all who knew him.
Don Babcock passed away at home on February 23, 2025. He will always be with us, in the Force, and in our hearts forever.
