Doris Jean Bolenbaugh was born to Clara and Carl Bolenbaugh, Sr. in Vilas, South Dakota on March 15, 1925. She was born in the creamery owned by her mother. After high school Doris worked as a telephone operator in Howard, South Dakota. She later joined her sister Molly in California where they worked at Lockheed during World War II. Doris and Molly purchased the only pick-up truck that their father ever had. While working at Lockheed, Doris met her husband, James A. Hill. They were married in Las Vegas. They never had any children, but Doris always had her beloved dogs, Zipper and Molly, which she loved like her children. She worked as the business manager for her husband’s company, James A. Hill Construction, until his retirement. They lived many years in houses they built in Granada Hills and retired to Agua Dulce where they spent the rest of their days in an apartment they also built. Doris was influential in designing the homes they built for themselves. Artistically she was very creative. She gave up an Art Scholarship she had won in South Dakota to work at Lockheed in California during World War II.
Doris was very active in the Methodist Church, which she attended regularly. She loved to go camping with friends and members from both sides of the family, which they did every summer. She loved to organize family gatherings around the holidays. Upon retirement they moved to Agua Dulce where Doris remained active in organizing events for the senior citizens in her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Newhall. Doris and Jimmy became avid snow birders, traveling to Quartzsite, Arizona every January to attend a gigantic swap meet. Doris and her best friend, Dottie Sanderson, always got ideas for Christmas presents. They would spend the rest of the year making them.
Doris is survived by her younger brother Carl, Jr. Preceding Doris in death were her husband James A. Hill; her parents Clara and Carl Bolenbaugh, Sr.; and her siblings Marie, Richard, Molly, William (Bing) and Betty Lou.
Funeral Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Newhall at 10:00 AM. Reception following. Burial service will be at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary in Newhall at 2:00 PM.
