

LOS ANGELES - Dr. Joyce Newman Giger, EdD, APRN-BC, FAAN, a resident of Santa Clarita, entered into eternal rest on March 28, 2025. Dr. Joyce Newman Giger was born on August 8, 1950, to Ionia (Holmes) Newman in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a family-oriented woman who loved her family, lived a life of faithfulness, and one of service for her community. Dr. Newman Giger was a pioneer in health equity with a focus on transcultural nursing, a prolific writer, and her passion as an educator was research and mentoring students.
Dr. Newman Giger accolades include: Retired Major U.S. Army Reserve, Golden Life Member Delta Sigma Theta, Honorary Doctorate and Creation of Nursing Program at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN; 1999- 2025 Editor, Journal of the National Black Nurses Association; 2003 National Black Nurses Association Trailblazer Award; 2004 Lulu Wolf Hassenplug Endowed Chair at UCLA and was the first African-American nurse appointed as a tenured professor in the school’s history; 2005 Honorary Doctorate, Humane Letters, Bethel College; 2005 Featured in the Spotlight, Culture divide, Advance for Nurses: Southern California; 2005 Scholar, Transcultural Nursing Society, Inducted in New York, NY; 2007 Named an Edge Runner for the Giger & Davidhizar Transcultural Assessment Model with Podium Presentation on November 9th at the Annual Convention of the American Academy of Nursing, Washington,DC; 2008 Elected to Instituted of Excellence for Contributions to Eliminate Health Disparities, National Black Nurses Association; 2009 The National Black Nurses Association, Institute for Excellence, Outstanding Contributions; 2022 Living Legend Award by the American Academy of Nursing; 2024 President's Lifetime Achievement Award, National Black Nurses Association.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Argusta Giger of Santa Clarita, CA; her son, D’Artagnan Newman, her daughter in love Carolyn and her grandson Taye Newman of Irvine, CA; her sisters, Annie Newman Knott of Tampa, FL, Brenda Rossell of Memphis, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; countless special friends and colleagues. Preceding her in death, her parent Ionia (Holmes) Newman, sister Susie Allen and brothers Roy Newman and Donald Agnew. Services for Dr. Joyce Newman Giger will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 2 p.m., at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary in Newhall, CA, where arrangements have been entrusted.
