February 2, 1938 – May 1, 2025
Irene Margit Melicher, age 87, of Newhall, California, passed peacefully in her home on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
Born on February 2, 1938, in Budapest, Hungary, Irene—known affectionately as Margit—lived a life marked by resilience, creativity, and deep devotion to her family and faith. In 1956, after the Hungarian Revolution was suppressed, she and her first husband, Kalman Melicher, fled their homeland as political refugees. They were among the first to arrive in the United States on a Red Cross plane, landing at Ellis Island in New York—a defining moment that shaped the rest of their lives.
Margit eventually made her home in Newhall, California, where she lived for most of her life. She worked at the SCV Senior Center as a trip and tours coordinator, helping others enjoy life’s adventures. A gifted painter and lifelong lover of music, Margit expressed her spirit through creativity and service. She was also a devoted member of her church, grounding her life in faith and compassion.
After her divorce from Kalman, Margit found love again with Edmond Harder, with whom she shared ten beautiful years until his passing in 2020.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Kathe Schindler, her granddaughter, Nicole Gonzales (and husband Zack Gonzales), and their cherished sons, Wyatt Gonzales and Oliver Gonzales; and her granddaughter, Cassidy Schindler. She also leaves behind many beloved friends and extended family members who will miss her dearly.
A funeral service for Irene will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary, 23287 North Sierra Hwy, Newhall, California 91321, followed by a committal service at 11:00 AM.
She will be remembered for her courage, her kindness, and the deep, enduring love she gave to all who knew her.
