Thelma "Joyce" Shea, née Hoover, was born on October 18, 1931, in Cherry Creek, New York, and passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, in Santa Clarita, California. Joyce was the daughter of Cyril Clarence "Bill" and Doris Hoover, née Weaver, and grew up in Buffalo, New York, alongside her siblings Mike, Dick, Ronny, Donna Duncan, and Cyndi Salscheider. Her parents and brothers have preceded her in death.
In 1947, Joyce moved to Sherman Oaks, California, where she graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1949. She continued her education at LA Valley Junior College, earning an Associate of Arts degree in 1951. Joyce began her professional career in the banking industry, working at Security First National Bank, Union Bank, and Trans World Bank from 1951 to 1966.
In 1960, Joyce married Philip Harrington Shea, and together they raised five children: Kathleen Carpenter, Patrick, Colleen "Kitty" Vang, Maureen "Micki" Vang, and Eileen "Peggy" Naillieux. She was a devoted mother who found her greatest joy in nurturing her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
Joyce contributed to her community as a volunteer at Honby Elementary School from 1969 to 1974 before becoming a kindergarten aide and art specialist teacher there until 1980. Joyce also served as the PTO President, Girl Scout Leader, and volunteered as a poll worker every election. After Honby Elementary School she worked at Interstate Trucking as a licensing agent from 1980 to 1982 and at JC Penney as a supervisor in their telemarketing department until her retirement in 1992.
A woman of many interests, Joyce enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Jeopardy, reading, crocheting, and collecting coins and stamps. She was also a talented artist whose creativity left a lasting impression on those who knew her. Joyce shared her artistic talents through sketching portraits of her children and friends.
Joyce's legacy lives on through her five children, thirteen grandchildren—Chad, Timothy, Jon, Jamie, Glenn, Shea, Phillip, Robert, Steven, Danielle, Tai, Taylor, and Daniel—and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Joyce was known best for her kind heart, selflessness, and humor. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
