Ruby was born & raised in Los Angeles. She was the eldest among four brothers and one sister. When she was only 11 years old, their mother passed away from a severe asthma attack. At such a young age, Ruby took responsibility of caring for her siblings until their dad remarried two years later. Even then, she often carried a heavy weight on her shoulders by the high expectations from her parents and the needs of her family.
After graduating from high school, Ruby thought about joining the military, but life led her in a different direction. She was hired by Trans-America Insurance company where she was able to put her exceptional shorthand & typing skills to use.
While working at Trans-America, Ruby met a man who would become the love of her life - Larry. Larry was working there part time as a security guard & quickly captured Ruby’s heart with his charm, kindness, and attentiveness. Two years later, they were married & began a lifelong partnership filled with love and support for one another that lasted 47 years.
Several years later, Ruby made a courageous career change, joining LAPD’s Parking Enforcement Division. She approached her new role with the same kindness, dedication, & strong work ethic that defined every part of her life. This was evident in the full-page newspaper article written by L.A. Life about her.
Many people experienced Ruby’s very caring & generous heart. Family, friends, neighbors, & even mere acquaintances who were struggling with illness, cancer, or financial hardship often found that Ruby, together with Larry, was ready to lend a helping hand. One example of this was when Ruby loaned her a sum of money to a fellow employee who was struggling financially. Although she was never paid back, Ruby was simply happy knowing she was able to help. Strangers also felt the warmth of Ruby’s kindness. She would often carry bags filled with gift cards, delightfully surprising people to brighten their day and to express her gratitude for their service. These small acts of generosity left big impressions.
One of Ruby’s greatest joys was dancing. Much like her father & a newly found relative, Uncle Ted, she was an excellent dancer who would dance to her heart’s delight. Ruby’s gift for dancing truly shone when she entered a dance contest at a Paula Abdul concert- and won! Her energy, rhythm, and radiant smile captured everyone’s attention as they always did. When Ruby danced you could see pure happiness radiating from her as she moved to the music. Her sister even nicknamed her “Dancing Queen”.
Ruby’s health & life took a difficult turn in 2018 when she was diagnosed with lymphoma of the eye. After being hospitalized & undergoing chemotherapy treatments, she went into remission. Sadly, the cancer returned & slowly spread to other parts of her body. However, Ruby continued showing the same strength that defined her throughout her battle with cancer. Despite her valiant fight against this disease, Ruby succumbed to its devastating effects on September 25th, leaving behind a legacy of courage, love, and an indelible spirit that will live on in all who knew her.
While her family, friends, and loved ones deeply grieve for Ruby’s passing, Psalm 139:7-10 brings them comfort:
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; If I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast.”
Ruby has always been in God’s loving hands, and now, for all eternity she dances in His presence.
