If there was one word I would have to use to best explain the way I felt about my mother it would be “proud”.  I have been proud of my mother from the beginning to the very end.

As a child, I was proud of my mother when she walked me to school, the store or the Doctor’s office.

In the teenage years when I would hear kids talk dismissively (or worse) about their parents,  I was always eager for both my mother and father to be around my friends, partly because I felt we were a unit, a team and partly because I trusted that they would impress my friends, making me seem cooler.

I was proud of my mother when she figured out how to take care of herself, thrive and be happy on her own.

I was proud of my mother when she pushed herself into better jobs, when she stuck her neck out and when she educated herself on everything from current events to health and wellness. I was proud of the way she aged, rarely using age as an excuse to make her less engaged or less responsible or less independent.

I was proud of my mother to the very end when she told doctors that she didn’t know how to explain how she felt because she’d never been 90 years old before, when she told counselors that she needed time to mourn the loss of some of her physical abilities (something they should have known), and when she was doing physical therapy to strengthen her balance and to breathe properly.  (She would tell doctors and staff, "My strength is pretty good, it's just that my stamina is not there.")

A short time before the end, we had an on-line visit with a palliative Doctor.  He asked my mother how much time she thought she had left to live.  She replied, “A person with my condition might have a few weeks to a few months… but I think it also depends on the individual.”  The doctor did not seem jazzed by the last part, but I was proud of her for putting it in.

Thank you, mom for everything you were.

Our condolences to Ruth’s family: Martin  (brother in law and Uncle  to my son) and his two sisters Lisa and Lorraine   

Ruth was family who spent time with us for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s day  and birthdays.  She was always witty and we enjoyed Ruth spending time with our family.  

We had a gift giving Christmas tradition with ornaments.  Ruth really liked the  ornaments and was appreciative.  It was a tradition that my son and I would spend hours  trying to track down  the perfect ornaments .  But Ruth was worth it.  The sad part of it is that we had picked out the perfect ornament for this Christmas and now we can’t give the gift but maybe dedicate it to her heavenly soul.

Our deepest condolences to Martin, Lisa, Lorraine, and their respective families.  We will miss Ruth’s presence.  We shared many meals together celebrating various events and enjoying one another’s company.  On these occasions, she would share about the lives and activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with much love and adoration.  These genuine experiences shared by Ruth over the years has formed an extended relationship with her family members.  We are honored to attend  her Memorial Service and look forward to meet and give our condolences to the family members.

She had written a short note about having been at AARP to get her taxes completed and she was reading a book I'd sent her, Happy Is The New Perfect, open,  and she read:  "If it ain't working for you, GRAB THE HOTSAUCE.  When she arrived home, she ate a potatoe & bean burrito with Hot Sauce....said Oh Dear!

Another time, she'd been reading in Now Is The Time,  which list 170 ways to seize the moment, I'd given her in Christmas 2021.  She wrote to me:
Look for the Humor, however dire the situation, It will break the tension, It will clear your mind, It will bring perspective and enhance understanding.

The greatest example of "Understanding" my Aunt ever gave me, was watching her, be the mother to her children, the examples of patience, love, patience in explanation of proper behavior with love at the same time, were in fact the very foundation of what I had to rely on when raising my own son.

So my dear cousins, Lisa, Martin, Lorraine, please know from your ole cousin of 78, that you had the most loving, understanding, patienct and philosophically sound "Mother" I have evern known, in my entire life.  I shall miss her tremendoulsy, love her the rest of my existance and pray with all my mind that she finds the happiness and peace she so richly deserves.

2023 after I had moved into my new casita.  I'd told her about purchasing Olympia Green, Green tea.  I appreciated so much the lightest and soft flavor of the tea.  You can imagine how hard I laughed at this cartoon.  Somehow she seemed to always know when I needed a perk-me-up laugh!  Her laughter is one that I shall NEVER forget, for it was genuine down to the depths of her mind and heart.

This one I do not remember the date.  But it was in reference to someone who had NOT been the courteous person they could have been.  What is said here has sooooo many ramifications, in of themselves that made me laugh for quite a few days.  She had the talent of finding humor in life at it's most negative point and turn it into a positive.  Someday I hope I will have learned to be better at life's positivity as was Joann.

Augut 22.  Sent to me by Joann after I had told her about my baby plant of 3 years reaching 4' tall and 2 1/2 ' wide.  I laughed so hilariouly after receiving this cartoon!

My mom loved my siblings and I   through positive support , wise advice, great  LOVE and a sacrifice,  admittedly I never realized these sacrifices until well into my own adulthood and raising my son. This  is coming from her first born (me)  and we didn't always see eye-to-eye , (which is probably not surprising or unexpected). 
She didn't waver when it came to her children.  When we lost Anthony her youngest, it's impossible for me to say how she 
navigated the loss. I believe that the loss of a child is a parents worse 'forever' changed experience and one that a parent should ever have to endure.  Like any death we all only learn to live through and with it but I know that my Mom somehow managed to go on when everything was telling her "how do I go on?"  
I'm sorry Mom that you had to experience losing Anthony.  
My mom possessed more integrity of any one person that I have ever met. She was an influence and example even at those we don't "see eye-to-eye moments."

 I will take with me moving forward in faith,   the security and promise that you are now reunited with Anthony as well as your loved ones gone before. 


As I told you shortly before your passing, "you were the best mother and that I was blessed that God chose you to be mine."  I love you and it   goes without saying, I will miss you. Your eternal life now is at the table with God,

I met Ruth nearly 10 years ago, while I was helping move her from Palmdale to Chatsworth.

I ended up driving her and some of her fragile belongings to Martin and Karen’s new house.

I told her she was the third Ruth I’ve ever met. And after the long drive we hit it off so well it was like we’d known each other for a long time. I told her she was “nothing but the truth Ruth” because “nothin but the truth comes out of your mouth!”

She was a straightforward woman. We talked about religion, politics, social justice, or injustice. Whatever we talked about she always had a nice point of view. She talked about her being a teacher for a long time. I’m sure she was very kind and caring teacher to her students because she was a kind and caring person with me.

Over 3 dozen times while I was visiting Martin and Karen’s house, Ruth would always greet me and spend time with me. Sometimes, we’d have lunch or dinner and would have a great time talking. She was always a wonderful, bright light. Always very positive and very caring. I enjoyed her company. She made me laugh. I smile when I think about her. She was a blessed person to know.

I love her like family.

It was with genuine sadness and deep reflection that the news of the passing of Ruth Ladine Gonzales was received.

I knew her as her eldest son's mother, "Martin's Mother."  Martin's Mother was always hospitable and personable; always making the other person feel comfortable and at ease.  She always asked about what you were doing and about your opinions on various subjects.  She made you feel as if you were the most important and interesting person in the entire World.

Martin's Mother would recount humorous but poignant anecdotes about the people in her life.  She loved her four children and her grandchildren and emphasized that they have integrity and treat other people with respect.  Ruth was genuinely appalled at the terrible injustices that were occurring at Martin's school at the time Martin was a schoolteacher.  She had a powerful sense of what was right and what was wrong.

Martin's Mother had a long and meaningful life.  She made the World a better place by how she treated other people.  Ruth Ladine Gonzales will be missed, but will always be remembered with great fondness.

May She Rest in Peace.

I remember when i was  very young my father would take me along on his visits to the house in Arleta. Mrs Ruth was always kind and spoke very softly to me especially, when myself and Anthony were up to no good and into our usual shenanigans. I will always remember her for that, and how she always acknowledged me when we were in each other’s company as the year’s evolved. 
Her gentle presence is reflected in her surviving children’s demeanor and respectful nature.
