Born in 1939, in Fort William-Ontario Canada (later became Thunder Bay), he moved to Los Angeles with his parents, George and Jaye, and his sister Diane – at the young age of 9. His parents made the move to get Wayne out of the damp environment into a drier climate, because he struggled with asthma.
Wayne grew up in the La Crescenta area of Southern California, hunting, fishing and camping at local canyons, rivers, and lakes and also fishing in the Sierra Nevada areas near Mammoth and June Lakes. He attended Glendale High School, graduated in the class of 1957 and went on to attend Glendale community college.
He considered pursuing a career in the trades, as a plumber, but ultimately landed a job as a manager at a local electronics manufacturing plant that specialized in making capacitors. He worked in the electronics field, mostly in management and sales, for the next 40-plus years, until he retired early at the age of 60.
He spent his later years spending time with his wife, Umpai Melvin, and being a grandpa to his three grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah, and Nathan. He was their grandpa, their driver, and their babysitter for the rest of his days, never missing a sporting event, school play, birthday, holiday, or even a soccer practice. He loved his family and he loved his best buddy – his dog, Pepper.
Wayne is survived by his wife Umpai Melvin, son Tom Melvin, and daughter in-law Shelley Melvin. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Cynthia Melvin; his father George Melvin; his mother Jessie (Jaye) Melvin; and his sister Diane Melvin.
