

Born April 7, 1928 in Catawba County, NC, he was the son of the late Eva Mauney Bowman and Henry Harrison Bowman. Mr. Bowman worked for Scronce Pump Company and then Bassett Furniture where he worked for 20 years in the trucking department. He then resided in Oak Island, NC where he worked at Fox Squirrel Golf course. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church, Startown all his life until 1986. He then moved to Oak Island where he attended St. Peters Lutheran Church and was very active in the choir and church life in general. He was a faithful and active member of the Lions Club International for over 50 years and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. After retirement he was a volunteer for many years at Dosher Hospital in Southport, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Scronce Bowman; 3 brothers, Fred, Cecil and Richard Bowman; 3 sisters, Linda Huffman, Lucille Lynch, and Catherine Cline, and step-grandson, Letch Frisbee, Jr.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Thelma Smith and Marie Scronce. Other survivors include his 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Eric and Rosemary Bowman, Scott and Karen Bowman, both of Newton; 3 grandchildren, Elizabeth Beal and husband, Marty of Maiden, Leah Shull and husband, Andrew of Cary, and Clayton Bowman of Newton; 1 step-grandson, Rodney Frisbee, of Newton, and 6 great-grandchildren, Sophia, Amelia, Eva, Isabella and Samuel Beal, Abigail Shull and 3 step great-grandchildren, Justin, Kyle, and Erin Frisbee.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Startown in Newton, with Rev. O. Ralph Kraft, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Memorial Park in Startown.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
