Born October 11, 1927 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late John Earl Burgess, Sr. and
Elizabeth Burgess Viar.
Helen was a former member of Brentwood Foursquare Gospel Church in Brentwood, MD. She retired from
Woodward and Lothrop Department Store. She loved studying the bible and had been a Sunday school teacher
for many years. After retirement, she moved to NC in 2004 to be closer to family members. She joined Christ
Alive Church in Newton and was active in the Tuesday Morning Prayer and Share group. She was a dedicated
and loving mother, grandmother, and sister. Helen spent her life caring for her son, Roy, until her health began
to decline.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Patricia Ann Weber and husband, Don of WI, Linda Sue
Smith of VA; sons, Morris Edward Colman, Jr., of MD, Kenneth Colman and wife, Shelby, of Newton, Roy Jay
Colman, of Newton.; sisters, Margaret Anderson and Kathryn Sypult, both of VA; 27 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Those who preceded her in death were her husband of 29 years, Morris Edward Colman, Sr.; daughters, Bessie
Colman Senf, Diane Colman Hackler; and son, Michael Joseph Colman. She is also preceded by brothers,
John Earl Burgess, Jr., Richard E. Burgess; sister, Evelyn C. Poole; and 2 grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Senf and Morris Edward Colman III.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Christ Alive Church in
Newton, with Rev. Mark Ivey officiating. Burial will be private at Conover City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., at the church.
