

Born August 30, 1940 in Haywood County, he was the son of the late Mack Murray Mercer and Nellie Brown Mercer Eckard.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church-Startown, in Newton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Michael and Woodrow Mercer and 1 sister, Mary Ann Mercer.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 28 years, Elizabeth L. Mercer; sons, Jimmy (James) L. Mercer of Granite Falls, Brian Keith Mercer of Newton; daughters, Donna Rhyne Medlin of Oakboro, Annie Rhyne Bailey and husband, Stuart of Stanley; brother, John Mercer and wife, Glenda of Waynesville; sister, Peggy M. Hager and husband, Terry of Maiden; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 3761 Startown Road in Newton, with Rev. O. Ralph Kraft, Jr. officiating. Following the service, full military honors will be presented at St. Paul Lutheran Mission property on Startown Rd.
Honorary Pallbearers are: Jonathan Mercer, Brent Hager, Lee Crisp, Trè Vaughn, Brandon Styers, Noah Medlin, and Dan Coffey.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:45 at the church.
