Jackie Matson, 88, died Tuesday evening, February 12, 2013 at Abernathy Laurels in Newton, NC. She was born July 10, 1924 in Union County and raised in Charlotte; the daughter of Marcus Leo Tadlock and Ada Gayle Tadlock. Being the youngest of the family, she was predeceased by both her parents and 6 siblings - Grady, Iberia, Sigsby, Thelma, Rachel and Jack. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1941 where she played sports and regularly sang in a trio on WBT radio.
Jackie loved to read and enjoyed sharing books with friends and family. Remarkably, she never forgot a birthday and always sent a card. She was dedicated to her church where she was active in the choir, committees and served as a deacon. Jackie never missed a ball game involving her children and was known to yell her support from the stands at Newton-Conover. When Janis and Jimmy went to college at UNC, her enthusiasm followed as she cheered for the Tar Heels. She worked in the family business with Jim at Newton Implement Company and always made time for both families, traveling to Charlotte, Alabama and many points in-between. The family traveled extensively on vacations including several where Jim won trips for selling farm equipment.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim, and survived by her children, Janis Matson and Julie Trotter of Pittsboro, Jim Matson Jr. and wife Cynthia of Denver, NC and Jeff Matson and wife Kim of Newton; her grandchildren, Chase Matson, Nicklaus Matson, Evan Matson, Adam Matson, Kinsey Matson, Aaron Matson, Tiffani McDonald and Tyler McDonald. She is also remembered by anyone who ever met her because she was just that wonderful and touched every life she contacted.
Flowers are appreciated, but the family's preference is memorial contributions to be made to Trinity Baptist Church, PO Box 4, 725 West 13th St, Newton, NC 28658. Services will be at Trinity Baptist on Sunday, February 17 with receiving at 2pm and services at 3pm.
