

Wendell Palmer Hummel, 81, of Newton and formerly of Raleigh, passed away on January 21st at Trinity Village in Hickory. Wendell was born in a small mining community in southeastern Kentucky and grew up in Williamsburg. He was a graduate of the University Of Kentucky College Of Engineering, receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering. He came to North Carolina in 1965 to begin a 37-year career with IBM in Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, retiring as an advisory engineer.
Wendell was predeceased by his parents, John and Opsy Hummel; his brothers, Quentin, John, and Robert Hummel; and sisters, June Petrey and Inez Hummel. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Sherrill Hummel, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, at the Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Scott Jeffreys will officiate. The family will begin receiving friends at 1 p.m., prior to the service at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
