Arthur was born on July 15, 1944 in Staten Island, NY to the late Frank and Lillian Elwell. Arthur pursued a Bachelor’s degree from New York University and went on to earn a Master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. He lived in Edgewater and Wyckoff before settling in Green Township in 1976. Prior to his retirement, he was a Software Engineer for UTRS.
Known for his exceptional problem-solving skills, Arthur served on the Green Township Planning Board for 12 years and played a key role in introducing computer technology to local schools, ensuring that future generations had access to essential educational tools. A passionate woodworking enthusiast, Arthur not only constructed his own home but also shared his skills with others, leaving a lasting legacy of craftsmanship. In addition to his professional achievements, Arthur was deeply involved in youth development as a Scout Master, helping to establish Boy Scout Troop 184 in Green Township.
An avid photographer, Arthur enjoyed capturing the beauty of the world around him and sharing those moments with family and friends. His commitment to community service and his unwavering support for those around him will be sorely missed.
The beloved husband to Mary Elwell, Arthur is also survived by his children, Elizabeth Fisher (Russell Prokop) and Arthur B. Elwell (Stephanie Elwell); his chosen daughters, Kim and Robin Mitchell; his siblings, Vivian Murray, Roger Elwell, and Douglas Elwell; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 from 4 pm - 8 pm at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 10 am at Christ Church, 62 Main St, Newton, NJ.
