David, affectionately referred to as “Guido” by his friends, was born in Trenton, NJ, but raised in Newton- a place he always considered home. After graduating from Delaware Valley High School in 2000, David proudly served as a member of the United States Army for eighteen years, serving four combat tours of duty in Iraq as an infantryman. After his deployments, David was assigned the role of drill sergeant and then later as a member of the honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery. David retired from the military in July of 2019, earning meritorious service medals and commendations for acts of bravery during times of war.
David had many passions- particularly anything involving the outdoors, fitness and motorcycles. If he wasn’t enjoying an afternoon ride on his Harley, he could be found at the local CrossFit or going for a “yog” around the area. Golfing and fishing also ranked at the top of David’s list of recreational pastimes. And, of course, family. David’s family, especially his three nieces and mother, meant everything to him.
David was preceded in death by his father, Joseph E. Matuszewski; his grandfather, Raymond Dunn; and his grandparents, Joseph & Emily Matuszewski. He is survived by his mother, Mary (Dunn) Matuszewski of Milford, PA; his sisters, Shannon (Matuszewski) Steele (Christopher) of Milford, PA, Lindsay Matuszewski (Stephen Filipiak) of Honesdale, PA and Brianna Matuszewski (Brian Jinselli) of Lords Valley, PA; his nieces, Devin Matuszewski and Taelyn & Taryn Steele; and his grandmother, Nancy Dunn and a long list of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St, Newton, NJ. A Celebration of Life gathering will follow from 1:30 to 4:30 pm at the Newton VFW Post 5360, 85 Mill St, Newton, NJ.
