
Born in Owens, Wisconsin, Robert moved to Sussex County and was a graduate of Newton High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for over thirteen years. Robert was a self-employed tow truck driver and mechanic before his retirement. An avid NASCAR fan, Robert was a member of The Wanderer’s Car Club.
The son of the late Orville and Ethelyn (Geiger) Matthies, Robert is also survived by his wife, Diana (Scott) Matthies; his son, Jonathan Matthies (Michelle) of Flagstaff, Arizona; his daughters, Melissa Matthies of Rockaway, and Melanie Matthies (Brian Cooper) of Frankford; his sisters, Marilyn Walsh of Hampton, Joyce Ellingsen (Ted) of Norwich, New York, and Linda Rydell (Jack Durbin) of Orlando, Florida; as well as his grandchildren, Emma Cooper, Nora Cooper, Sean Matthies and Dylan Matthies.
Private graveside services were held in the Northern New Jersey Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery in Sparta Township.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
