He was predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Mary Walsh Campbell and is survived by his brothers, Daniel, Edmund and James, and his sister, Mary Lu, 10 nieces and nephews and 18 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Born on November 23, 1935 in Lewiston Maine, Tom and his family moved to Glens Falls, N.Y., and, after the death of his father in 1945, to East Orange, N.J. After graduating from Clifford Scott High School, Tom enlisted in the Marine Corps and went through the infamous boot camp of swampy Parris Island, S.C. in the heat of July and August of 1953. He served his country honorably and was discharged as a sergeant.
Tom put himself through Upsala College in East Orange at night and after graduating attained his CPA designation. He spent his career with RCA, Schering Plough and Merck, and traveled to more than 30 countries on their behalf. Wherever trouble arose at a remote facility, Tom was on a plane to set things right.
He was a lifelong bachelor but his life was thoroughly committed to family. A role model and guide to his loving brothers and sister, Tom was also a selfless and dedicated Uncle to his many nieces and nephews. They nicknamed him “Tio,” and no one ever had a more loving, involved or gentle uncle.
Tom was a huge fan of just about every sport. He played baseball and basketball as a young man and later in life he took up golf with a passion. Regretfully, he was a terrible golfer, but by means of hard work and with the benefit of a high handicap, he once won the highly coveted President’s Cup of Newton Country Club. He closely followed his Giants and Knicks but his true love was reserved for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. He lived and died with them from the 1940’s on, often taking his nephews and nieces to Cardinal games in New York or Philadelphia, teaching them the lost art of filling out a box score, and even leading them on a few pilgrimages to see the Cards at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
A man of deep faith, Tom was a devout Catholic and a generous supporter of his parish. But his generosity extended to anyone in need. Tom never received a request for help from any charity, hundreds of them, which wasn’t answered promptly with a check.
He is gone from us but his goodness will remain forever, his memory cherished by all who knew him. He will be missed by so many.
His funeral services will be on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, RT 206, Sandyston, NJ, with a viewing at the church from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Father Wayne Varga will celebrate the funeral Mass starting at 11:00 AM and internment will follow at Frankford Plains Cemetery in Frankford Twp.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to St Thomas the Apostle Church.
