Ernst lived a long, full life defined by devotion to family, quiet strength, strong faith and a spirit of kindness. Ernst was born on September 15, 1931 in Austria, to Anna and Adolf Frey. He was the oldest brother of Arthur, Waldemar, Christa Haake and Hugo Frey, all of Germany. He is also survived by many other relatives residing in Germany.
He was the cherished husband of Rosa (nee Keller) for 70 loving years and dear father of Irene Frey (deceased 1973) and Gisela Ferguson (Bob). He will be dearly missed by grandchildren Bryan (Lauren), Shawn (Lisa) and Tyler Ferguson.
Ernst immigrated to Canada from Germany as a young man to find work and build a life with his beloved wife Rosa, spending the first years of their marriage in St. Catharines, Hamilton, Niagara-On-The-Lake and finally settling permanently in Niagara Falls. Ernst was a long time employee at Hayes-Dana.
Ernst enjoyed being a member for many years at the German Village in Niagara Falls. He loved spending his time playing cards, organizing and attending cultural events, and dancing the night away at many dinner dances. An avid traveller, he loved to return home to see family, and often fondly talked about and remembered his many cruises with Rosa and their good friends. In his retirement, you could find him walking Oakes Park or enjoying a coffee at his favourite Tim Hortons, especially with his best friend Joe Schankula.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Teresa, Terry and Stephanie Sicard and Elwin and Mena Lauber for their visits, lifelong friendship and unwavering support of Ernst and Rosa, especially during the past few years they have resided at Bella. Thank you also to the caring and compassionate staff at Chippawa Creek at Bella Care Residence.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patterson Funeral Home in Niagara Falls. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will occur at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Ernst will be remembered for his kind, gentle nature and unwavering love. He was truly a joy to be around and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
