Barbara Felton Thorne, of East Lyme, and formerly of New London, CT, New York City, Stuttgart, West Germany, Cape May Court House, NJ, Yorktown, VA, Monterey, CA, Niantic, CT, Charleston, SC, passed away on March 5, 2024. She was born on October 28, 1946, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Henry D. Felton, III, and Martha (Oberly) Felton.
Born into a Navy household and married to a Coast Guard officer, Barbara lived on both coasts and in West Germany. She studied at Douglas College earning a BS in Sociology and became a social worker in Northern New Jersey. She loved traveling throughout Europe and Mexico especially to visit art museums and to enjoy the architecture. She was an active member of the Officer Wive’s Club and President of the Yorktown Chapter. She raised two sons, and supported Bob’s career. She hosted many international students at both the Naval Postgraduate school and at the Coast Guard Academy, and helped run the Class of 1969 reunion committee.
Barbara is survived by her husband Captain Robert W. Thorne (USCG Ret.); sons Robert W. Thorne, Jr., and his wife Marielle of Hingham, MA, and Thomas Thorne and his wife Vanda of Prague; sister Jane Varano of Bonita Springs, FL; sister-in-law Pamala Felton of Cockeysville, MD, grandchildren Kyle, Spencer, Vanesa, and Fillip Thorne. She was predeceased by her brother Henry Felton, IV.
