

Alfred J. (“Al”) Moore, Sr. of Chesapeake passed away on December 31, 2015, after a long battle against multiple myeloma and kidney disease. A Norfolk native, Moore worked as a sales representative for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia for approximately ten years. He last served as the Chief of Police at the Norfolk International Airport, retiring in 1991. Born in Norfolk in 1926 and the son of Mr. John Alton and Cleo Moore, Moore graduated from Norview High School in 1944. Because of his prowess as a multi-sport athlete, he received a full scholarship offer from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. However, he was drafted into the Army and served as a rifleman with the 7th Armored Division in Belgium and Germany in 1945. After leaving active service in 1947, he attended East Carolina Teachers’ College (now East Carolina University). During the late ‘40s and early ‘50s he played baseball in the Carolina League. Beginning in the late ‘50s and continuing into the ‘60s, he was an active participant in the Norfolk City Baseball League, playing on numerous teams, including those sponsored by Colonial Chevrolet, Wisco Storm Windows and Doors, and Zoby Plumbing.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk and the 7th Armored Division Association.
Moore is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Moore, his brother Kenneth Moore of Suffolk, and his sister Margie Jamison of Richmond. He is also survived by a son, Alfred Moore, Jr., his spouse Norma of Virginia Beach, their children Tina Price and Kevin Moore of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by a daughter, Terry Trammell, her husband Ronald, their sons, Josh and Matt Barnes, and five great-grandchildren.
A visitation and viewing will be conducted on January 4, 2016 from 6 PM till 8 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 6329 E. VA Beach Blvd. in Norfolk. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 AM on January 5, 2016 at Norfolk’s Forest Lawn Cemetery at 8100 Granby St. Following the burial service, the family and friends will proceed to a reception at the home of Alfred Moore, Jr.
