

She was born on March 22, 1923 in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines to Jesus B. Aguilar and Carmen Daminar Aguilar. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Frankie, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Left to cherish her memories are a sister, Sol Legaspi, a brother, Captain Arturo Aguilar, both of the Philippines, her son Philip and wife Kathe of Kill Devil Hills, NC., son Roy of Norfolk, Va. and daughter Amy and husband Paul of Chesapeake, Va.. Her seven grandchildren, Martin and wife Erin, Ian, Caroline, Bri, Kyle, Dylan, Elias, and her 2 great grandsons Parker and Miles, and many loving nieces and nephews in the States and the Philippines.
Beatriz was a Graduate of Misamis Oriental High School in Cagayan do Oro City, Philippines. She also graduated from North General Hospital School of Nursing in Manila.
After she graduated she worked as a nurse in the Philippines until 1953 when she came to the U.S.. She worked as a nurse in Chicago and New Jersey. She moved to Norfolk in 1962 and worked as a nurse at DePaul Hospital. In 1966 she moved to Hawaii, with her husband Frankie who was in the U.S. Navy. In 1968 they were transferred back to Norfolk where they remained. From 1971 through 1988 Beatriz worked as a nurse at the Norfolk Community Hospital. In 1988, after many years of dedicated service , she retired.
Beatriz loved singing, line dancing with her friends at Church, participating in her church choir, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. After she retired, she was able to devote more time to her family, church activities, traveling abroad, and many other things that she loved.
In her husband’s final years of declining health, Beatriz was able to use her wonderful nursing skills to lovingly take care of him.
After many years of taking care of others, her children were able take care of her. Especially her son Roy who became her full time care giver.
We would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers, during this sad time. We would also like to thank the nurses and Hospice team who helped in her final months.
In honor of Beatriz A. Zarate, a visitation will be held Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA., from 5 to 8pm. Novena will be said at 5, for anyone who would like to participate, and Wake service will start at 6. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 12pm, at St Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 Halprin Drive, Norfolk, VA. A reception will follow immediately after the burial at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
